 Manually creating a new Dial-Up Networking Connection in Windows 95 or 98

Double click on the My Computer icon, then double click on Dial-Up Networking.

Double click on the icon Make New Connection.

In the space labeled "Type a name for the computer you are dialing", type in NetDotCom.
NOTE: In some instances Windows may think you have more than one modem installed, please verify that the proper modem is selected in "Select a device"

Type in one of the phone numbers listed below, then click Next. You can also use NetDotComs' Number Finder to locate access numbers in other areas.

IMPORTANT: Please use a number that is a local call from your location. If you do not know which number to select, please call NetDotCom for assistance or check with your telephone company operator. Dial "0" (zero) and ask the operator if there is a charge to dial the number selected. IMPORTANT! NetDotCom will not be responsible if your choice results in toll charges appearing of your phone bill.

Click Finish.
Note: If there are old or unused icons for other online services, you can delete them by selecting and deleting each one, except for: "Make New Connection" and "NetDotCom".

 

Click on the icon NetDotCom, then click on the File menu in the Dial-Up Networking window and click Properties.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: There are two different versions of Dial-Up Networking. The screen below shows the newer version.

The older version has a "Server Type" button located next to the Configure button located near the bottom of the screen. Click here to review the older version

 

Next, click on the Server Types tab to show the follow settings. Make sure your settings match the settings shown here.

 

Click on the TCP/IP Settings button. Verify your system matches the settings shown below.

 

The Scripting and Multilink tabs are shown below. Neither of these tabs are used with NetDotCom, however the proper settings are shown for verification purposes.

 

 

Click on the OK button until you return to the Dial-Up Networking window. Close Dial-Up Networking to return to the Windows Desktop.

You should also verify the proper settings in the Network icon located in the Control Panel.


IMPORTANT: The settings detailed below are only applicable if you have then original version of Windows 95.

If you have the older version of Dial-Up Networking, the General tab screen layout is shown below. Verify that the correct phone number is typed in. Also verify that the modem is selected correctly. Many times updates to the modem software will change the name of the modem and cause connection difficulties. Click on the Down Arrow in the "Connect using" section to see if any other entries exist for your modem.

Click on the OK button until you return to the Dial-Up Networking window. Close Dial-Up Networking to return to the Windows Desktop.

You should also verify the proper settings in the Network icon located in the Control Panel.
