Creating Multiple Identities in Outlook Express Version 5 & 6

What are identities?

Identities are a way for several people to share Outlook Express on the same computer.

For example, you and a family member may share a computer. When you each create an identity, you would each see your own messages and your own contacts when you log on under your identity. Once your identity is created, you can organize your messages and contacts the way you want them by creating subfolders. This feature is only necessary if each user also has their own email address.

Outlook Express automatically creates a default identity called "Main"

To create a new identity, start Outlook Express click on the File menu, select Identities then Add New Identity.

Type in a name to call this new Identity. In this example, John Doe is setting up an Identity and email address for his wife, Jane Doe.

When the new identity is created you are asked if you want to switch to the new identity, click No.

In the Manage Identities window you will now see two identities, the new one you just created "Jane Doe" and "Main" which is created automatically by Outlook Express.

If you want to password protect an identity (optional) select the identity then click the Properties button.

Next we want to tell Outlook Express to ask us which identity to use each time Outlook Express is started.

Click in the check box to remove the check mark next to "Use this identity when starting a program". This will cause Outlook Express to display a login screen when Outlook Express is started. Click Close.

When more than one identity exists Outlook Express will display the name of the current identity in the main title bar as shown below.

Now, close Outlook Express and log out of the current identity. Click on the File menu then click Exit and Log Off Identity.

Next time you start Outlook Express you will be shown the Identity Login screen below. Click on the desired identity then click OK. If the selected identity is password protected, the Password space will be active and allow you to type in the password.

Creating the identity only creates the individual message and address book storage areas on your computer

The new Identity must now be setup to access the e-mail account at NetDotCom to send and receive e-mail! Click here to run the Outlook Express connection wizard for help on configuring Outlook Express.

It is also necessary for NetDotCom to create the corresponding e-mail address/account on our servers. If you have not done this please contact NetDotCom via e-mail or phone to have an e-mail account created.
