Creating an Additional E-mail Account in Outlook Express Version 5 & 6

These instruction will help you create an additional e-mail account in Outlook Express Version 5 & 6.

The procedure detailed here is intended for one person using multiple NetDotCom email addresses. It stores all sent and received messages in one set of message folders.

If you need to store the messages from different account separately (business & personal or different family members) NetDotCom suggests you use the Identity feature of Outlook Express to setup multiple Identities for each account or family member. Instructions for setting up multiple Identities can be located here.

Start Outlook Express

Click on the Tools menu then click on Accounts.

The Internet Accounts window is shown below, currently on the "All" tab. Click on the Mail tab to view only the Email accounts.

Any email accounts will be listed in the Internet Accounts window shown below. If you do not use these accounts you should remove them to prevent errors. To remove any unused account, click on the account name and click the "Remove" button.

To setup Outlook Express to access your NetDotCom account, click Add, and then Click Mail... This will start the Internet Connection Wizard.

The Display Name is is used to personalize your outgoing e-mail. People you send e-mail to will see your e-mail as being 'From' the name typed in below. Note: This is not the same as your e-mail address. Click Next to proceed.

Type in your e-mail address exactly as given to you by NetDotCom. Normally it should be in all small letters, however you can use capital letters to make it easier to read. No spaces are permitted. Click Next to proceed.

Next, the Incoming and Outgoing mail server names need to be typed in. The following table indicates the proper mail server name to use based on your selected NetDotCom e-mail address. After the information is entered, click Next to proceed.

In the "Account name" space, please type in your e-mail address and password exactly as given to you by NetDotCom. This must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes will prevent you from retrieving e-mail sent to you. The 'check boxes' should be selected as shown. Click Next to proceed.

The final screen completes the process. Click Finish to complete and close the wizard.

The newly created account (highlighted) is now listed in the Internet Accounts window shown below. The original account is designated as the (default) account.

IMPORTANT: Before the new account can be used a setting has to be changed. This setting in not configured properly by the New Account Wizard.

Click on the new "pop.netdotcom.c.." entry then click on the Properties button

In the example below we have renamed the account from "pop.netdotcom.com" to "Work Account" which is more user friendly.

Next click on the Servers tab.

On the Servers tab, at the bottom of the window in the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the box labeled "My server requires authentication" then click the Apply button.

Click on the Settings button and verify the settings match those shown below.
