 Setup Outlook Express to access mailbox subfolders

If you are using the mailbox subfolder feature NetDotCom provides to "code" the e-mail addresses you give to web sites and other casual contacts. You need to setup Outlook Express to retrieve the messages stored in the subfolders that are created when messages are sent to the coded e-mail addresses.

Outlook Express will automatically retrieve any messages stored in your mailbox in the main message folder. However messages stored in subfolders are not automatically retrieved. The steps below will guide you through the process.

NetDotCom recommends using NetDotCom's E-Mail Setup Wizard. It makes the process of setting up a new e-mail address on your computer system quick and easy. All you need to know is your username and password, the wizard does the rest.

Start Outlook Express

Click on the Tools menu then click on Accounts.

In the Internet Accounts widows click on the Mail tab if it is not already selected.

Next, click on the Add button then click Mail. This will start the Internet Connection Wizard. Your existing account (accesses main mailbox folder) should already be listed.

When the wizard is run, all the information will be copied from your primary account and will pre-fill the appropriate entries in this new account. It is only necessary to change two settings.

The 'Display Name' is is used to personalize your outgoing e-mail. People you send e-mail to will see your e-mail as being 'From' the name typed in below. Note: This is not the same as your e-mail address. Click Next to proceed.

This is the first change. Your e-mail address needs to include the codeword for this account so when you send messages they have the right return e-mail address. If your e-mail address is janedoe@netdotcom.com please insert a hyphen then the codeword, ie. janedoe-codeword@netdotcom.com before @netdotcom.com. Normally your e-mail address should be all small letters, however you can use capitals to make it easier to read. No spaces are permitted. Click Next to proceed.

Next the Incoming and Outgoing mail server names need to be typed in. The following table indicates the proper mail server names to use based on your e-mail address. After the information is typed in, click Next to proceed.

E-mail address to server name mapping

If your e-mail address ends with

Type in this mail server name

@netdotcom.com

 Incoming Mail Server: pop.netdotcom.com

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.netdotcom.com

@ndcis.com

Incoming Mail Server: pop.ndcis.com

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ndcis.com

@digitaldrive.net

Incoming Mail Server: pop.digitaldrive.net

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.digitaldrive.net

Any other email name

Incoming Mail Server: pop.ndcis.net

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ndcis.net

This is where the second change is made. The account name needs to include the codeword for this account so you can retrieve messages from the proper subfolder. Please type in your e-mail address exactly as you did in the above step, including the proper codeword. Type in your mailbox password at this time also. These must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes here will prevent you from retrieving e-mail from this subfolder. The 'check boxes' should be selected as shown. Click Next to proceed.

The final screen completes the process. Click Finish to complete and close the wizard.

The newly created account (highlighted) is now listed in the Internet Accounts window shown below. The original account is designated as the (default) account.

IMPORTANT: Before the new account can be used a setting has to be changed. This setting in not configured properly by the New Account Wizard.

Click on the new "pop.netdotcom.c.." entry then click on the Properties button

In the space indicated below, type in a name or label to identify this particular account you setup to access this particular subfolder. Click on Apply then click OK when done.

Next click on the Servers tab.

On the Servers tab, at the bottom of the window in the Outgoing Mail Server section, check the box labeled "My server requires authentication" then click the Apply button.

The Internet Accounts window now shows the renamed account. Click Close or repeat the above steps for other coded e-mail address you are using.

You can begin using Outlook Express immediately to send and receive e-mail using this subfolder.

Note: When you retrieve mail ("Send/Receive" button) all accounts/subfolders listed above will be checked for mail at the same time.

Usage instructions can be located in the Technical Support section of the NetDotCom web site.
