 Mailbox subfolder setup in Netscape Communicator Versions 4.5, 4.6, 4.7

If you have used the mailbox subfolder feature NetDotCom provides to "code" the e-mail addresses you give to web sites and other casual contacts. You need to setup Netscape to retrieve the messages stored in the subfolders that are created when messages are sent to the coded e-mail addresses.

The normal Netscape setup will only retrieve messages stored in the primary mailbox folder. Messages stored in subfolders are not retrieved unless specifically setup to using the steps detailed below.

Click on Start > Programs > Netscape Communicator > Utilities > User Profile Manager.

When the Profile Manager appears, click the New button to create a new profile. Note: If Netscape has not been used before there will not be any existing profiles listed.

In Full Name, type in your real name or the name you want to appear on messages you send to other people. In Email Address, type in your email address, inserting the codeword for this profile so when you send messages they have the right return e-mail address. If your e-mail address is janedoe@netdotcom.com please insert a hyphen then the codeword, ie. janedoe-codeword@netdotcom.com before @netdotcom.com. Normally your e-mail address should be all small letters, however you can use capitals to make it easier to read. No spaces are permitted. Click Next to proceed.

The next screen shows the profile name and storage location of the profile. We recommend that you leave both at the suggested settings.

Next, the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server name needs to be typed in. The following table indicates the proper mail server name to use based on your selected NetDotCom e-mail address. After the information is entered, click Next to proceed.

If your e-mail address ends with

Type in this mail server name

@netdotcom.com

 Incoming Mail Server: pop.netdotcom.com

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.netdotcom.com

@ndcis.com

Incoming Mail Server: pop.ndcis.com

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ndcis.com

@digitaldrive.net

Incoming Mail Server: pop.digitaldrive.net

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.digitaldrive.net

Any other email name

Incoming Mail Server: pop.ndcis.net

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.ndcis.net

In Mail server user name, please type in your e-mail address and password exactly as given to you by NetDotCom. This must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes will prevent you from retrieving e-mail sent to you.  The Mail server user name needs to include the codeword for this account so you can retrieve messages from the proper subfolder. Please type in your e-mail address exactly as you did in the previous step, including the proper codeword. Type in your mailbox password at this time also. These must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes here will prevent you from retrieving e-mail from this subfolder. The 'check boxes' should be selected as shown. Click Next to proceed.

The Incoming Mail Server is the same as the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server name used above.
Set the "Mail Server type" to POP3. Click Next to proceed.

Leave the News (NNTP) server entry blank. Click Finish to save the new profile, Communicator will then start up.

If Netscape was never used or installed on your computer the following screen will ask if you want Netscape to be your default web browser, click Yes.

After Netscape starts, click Edit then Preferences.

In the Preferences window under Categories, click on Navigator. In "Location:", type in http://www.netdotcom.com exactly as shown.

Next, click on the "+" (plus sign) next to Mail & Newsgroups.

Under Categories, click on Mail Servers, then in "Outgoing mail server user name", type in your e-mail address with the codeword. This must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes will prevent you from retrieving e-mail sent to you. Then click on the Edit button.

Next, click on the Edit button. In "User Name", type in your e-mail address exactly as you did on the previous step with the codeword. This must be typed in all small letters without any spaces. Any mistakes will prevent you from retrieving e-mail sent to you. If you want Netscape to remember your e-mail password, check the box shown. Then click on the OK button.

Click on the OK button to close the Preferences window and begin using Netscape

If you have additional e-mail accounts or codeword subfolders with NetDotCom, run the User Profile Manager as many times as you need, entering the appropriate information for each profile.
