 Verify Windows 95 & 98 Dial-Up Networking Settings

Many times Windows 95/98 will incorrectly configure itself, causing random connection difficulties. Verify that your system matches the optimum settings shown below.

Close all programs and windows and return to the main screen (Windows Desktop). Double click on the My Computer icon.

In the My Computer window double click on the Dial Up Networking folder icon.

In the Dial-Up Networking window, click once on the NetDotCom icon then click on the File menu then Properties.

IMPORTANT: There are two different versions of Dial-Up Networking. The newer version has Server Types, Scripting & Multilink tabs and is detailed first on this page.

The older version (detailed at the bottom of this page) has a Server Type button located next to the Configure button located near the bottom of the screen.

Verify that the correct phone number is typed in.

Next, verify that the correct modem is selected. Updates to modem software (firmware or drivers) may change the name of the modem and will cause problems. Click on the Down Arrow in the "Connect using" section to see if any other modem entries are listed.

Type in one of the phone numbers listed below, then click Next. You can also use NetDotComs' Number Finder to locate access numbers in other areas.

IMPORTANT: Please use a number that is a local call from your location. If you do not know which number to select, please call NetDotCom for assistance or check with your telephone company operator. Dial "0" (zero) and ask the operator if there is a charge to dial the number selected. IMPORTANT! NetDotCom will not be responsible if your choice results in toll charges appearing of your phone bill.
