How to identify your modem type in Windows 2000

The determine the type of modem installed in your computer, use the following instructions.

  • Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel

  • Double click on to display the Phone and Modem Options window shown below

  • Click on the Modems tab to display the modem window. The name of the modem and the COM (Communications) port it's connected to is listed in this window.

This is all that is necessary to identify your particular modem brand and name. If you want to verify whether Windows can communicate properly with the modem, proceed to the next step.

If the modem listed is called "Standard #####bps Modem" then your modem is not installed properly and you should contact your computer vendor for support.

  • Click on the Properties button to display the modem properties window. The General tab is displayed first.

  • Next, click on the Diagnostics tab, shown below.

  • Click on the Query Modem button. You will get the following window. Note you must be offline to perform this procedure.

  • After a few seconds the modem will respond to the commands that XP sends to it filling in the Command & Response section of the Diagnostics tab. If Windows is unable to communicate with the modem you will get an error message.
